Three Sewer Hitter is a tribute to the game of Stickball, in which a ball hit the length of three sewers is a home run.

Bobbi Mastrangelo is internationally known for her art work based on manhole covers, water covers, grates and drains called “Grate Works of Art.”The original covers are located on the sidewalks and streets of urban areas.

Stickball was an inner city street game in the early 1900’s. The bat was a sawed off broomstick and the ball was a pink rubber Spauldine, too soft to break car windows or any other glass in dwellings. Home base was the first sewer cover. Parked cars served as first and third base. the second sewer was 2nd base. Hitting past the third sewer, about 90 feet or more was considered a home run.
