The Story of Irish Blessings
Bobbi Mastrangelo’s young friend, Helen Anne Gately, gave her reference material on The Ballinasloe Water Valve Cover. The little cover was located on a stone sidewalk near her Father’s hometown in Ireland. It featured a handsome Celtic Pattern, and also had the Gaelic Word “Uisce” which means water.

About the Bell System

The familiar Telephone Manhole Cover can be seen in cities all over the United States.  Its unique pattern of interlocking hexagons and triangles sets it apart from ordinary circular manhole covers.

The artist also incorporated sections of the design in works including The Bell System” an embossed print on hand made paper and “Blue Bell”, an 18” x 24” embossed image on hand made paper.  She adapted the theme  We Are All Connected” in her traced monotypes and works on canvas.

  1. How Do I Feel About Aging? (Or Having Fun at Solivita in Florida)

Preface: This story was composed at The Sol Writers’ Last Meeting July 24, 2006. To warm-up, we select a topic and then have ten minutes to write about it. The topic was transitions: “How Do You Feel About Aging?

Aging can be scary, hobbling around, bored and sickly, but I am at Solivita. Solivita is An Active Adult Retirement Community for adults age 55 and older. It’s so active in fact, that it’s exhausting. Just watching the pace and schedule of the Solveets is invigorating.

I get more exercise in Zena’s Walking for Wellness Class, personal walks and swimming than I ever did since I was a High School Cheerleader. My mind is stimulated and challenged by our Writer’s Club, A Novel Group (Book Club), singing with “Guys and Dolls Chorus”, creating Art Work and continually studying various foreign languages.

Aging is a time of wisdom and relaxation. Our adult children Mike, Pete and Anne Marie seek our wisdom from experience. Al and I can relax, spoil and play with our four grandchildren. We don’t have those parenting responsibilities to hold us back.

Sometimes, I wish I could kneel more easily and get up off the floor effortlessly after playing with the grandkids. And I definitely wish I did not have to wear bifocals.

But I am so lucky to have a devoted husband and partner. The cassita is my art studio with the bonus of a computer and sewing machine. Out in my studio, I can create to my heart’s content. Friends abound and the social life here at Solivita is stimulating and enjoyable. I am aging in paradise.
