<p>On View Friday, May 11–Sunday, August 26, In recognition of the artists of Western New York and our role as the center of record for the arts of this region, the Burchfield Penney Art Center is very pleased to host the second members&#8217; exhibition in the museum’s history. This celebration of artistic expression in our community is important. It was fitting that the last exhibition in our Rockwell Hall galleries was our first members&#8217; exhibition—and now, more than 3 years after the new museum opened to the public, we are excited to host <em>The Artists Among Us II.</em></p>

<address style="text-align: center;"> </address>
<address style="text-align: left;"> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">&#8220;Buckeye&#8221; at Buffalo is special to me for these reasons. It was created for last summer&#8217;s Juried exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.  (My birthplace was Youngstown Ohio.)  I grew up in Western New York and attended  Buffalo</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"> State Teachers College with the Jenkins Memorial PTA Scholarship for  Elementary Education.</span></address>
<address style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"> At BSTC, I met Al Mastrangelo and we were married in our senior year of college. Now Mastrangelo was a fantastic name for an artist and I always wanted to be a professional artist.  I taught Elementary School for six years and later studied art while I was a stay-at-home Mom.  I pursued my art passion even during the later time that I became a Title One Tutor. </span></address>
<address style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Coming full circle, my art is being exhibited at BSTC&#8217;s Burchfield Penney Art Center adjacent to the College Campus. In 2004, before the Art Center was built, my sculpture relief &#8220;Water Cover&#8221;was chosen for a Juried Exhibit of BSTC Graduates whose works were in prominent collections. Entitled &#8220;NY Collects Buffalo State&#8221; the exhibit was displayed at Burchfield-Penney&#8217;s former galleries in Rockwell Hall. So &#8220;Buckeye&#8221; is pleased to be on exhibit in the prestigious new Burchfield-Penney Art Center and so am I. But my husband Al teases that he married a &#8220;Sane&#8221; Elementary School Teacher who became a crazy artist.</span></address>

<p style="text-align: left;">This year&#8217;s black and white image is the third in a series.  2010 featured Art Carney as Ed Norton emerging from a sewer. 2011 exhibited a Ford Water Meter Pit cover. The portrait of myself in front of my sculpture creation fits the theme of black and white and NYC manhole covers. Ed Norton worked in the NYC Sewers and my &#8221; Borough of Manhattan,&#8221; is based on an actual New York City Grate.</p>
<p>The Grateworks Collection for National Postcard Week is  displayed under my bio/about.</p>
<p>Each year I choose one of my sculptures or art happenings to be reproduced  as a post card for NPCW.</p>
<p>National Post Card Week is celebrated annually during the first full week of May. I correspond with almost two- hundred post card pen pals in The United States and abroad.</p>

Imagine my surprise when I learned that there was a site in Moscow specializing in the theme I pursued in sculptures and works on hand made paper.  <a href="http://sewers.artinfo.ru/default.htm"><span style="color: #888888;">Sewers of the World, Unite!</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>What is even more amusing is that this web project began on Laughter Day: April 1, 2001.  </strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2443" rel="attachment wp-att-2443"><span style="color: #888888;"><img class="aligncenter" title="Sewers Unite" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Sewers-Unite1.gif" alt="" width="486" height="161" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;">&#8220;SEWERS OF THE WORLD UNITE&#8221;</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;">(A Moscow Web Site)</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #888888;">Two enterprising artists, Alexander (Sasha) Kholopov and Natalie (Natasha) Lamanova from Moscow posed a mail art project just for fun.  They invited artists from all over the world to send photos of manhole covers.  So April’s Fools Day was the start of something “grate.”  Artists from 40 countries enthusiastically responded to the E-mail request.  </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #888888;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2503" rel="attachment wp-att-2503"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2503" title="Artistamps" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Artistamps-300x200.gif" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #888888;">Kholopov’s unique set of manhole cover artist&#8217;s stamps had already attracted attention in Japan, a country known for many beautiful manhole covers. (See <strong>Archives)</strong>  The variety of photos, creative projects and artistically rendered covers on “<strong>Sewers of the World, Unite</strong>” has expanded to participation by 233 people from 71 countries and includes 3052 images.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #888888;">Michele Brody designer of NYC Manhole Covers, introduced me to the site.   <a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2443" rel="attachment wp-att-2443"><span style="color: #888888;">http://www.recoveringthecityscape.com/</span></a></span></p>

</span></a>Why I created the Sculpture Relief: &#8220;City of Orlando.&#8221; </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;">Orlando Museum of Art&#8217;s First Thursday&#8217;s Competition for January 5, 2012 called for sculptures. Remembering the brick pavers surrounding the Orlando Museum of Art, I thought, &#8220;Why not enter the competition with a streetscape scene from the Museum grounds. That would be a form of &#8220;Pop Art&#8221; based on common objects: a manhole cover and surrounding bricks that museum visitors walk over to enter its hallowed walls.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2263" rel="attachment wp-att-2263"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2263 aligncenter" title="Oma Bricks, arrow 5" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Oma-Bricks-arrow-5-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="203" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;">Orlando Museum of Art (Florida, USA)</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;">Two references were needed: close-up photos of the bricks which were provided by Jamieson and a rubbing of the manhole cover which Susan Raff cheerfully delivered.  Here she is on the museum grounds, sweeping off the manhole cover, preparing for the rubbing.</span></p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2277" rel="attachment wp-att-2277"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2277" title="Rubbing Readiness" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Rubbing-Readiness-300x209.jpg" alt="" width="270" height="188" /></span></a></span></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;">Susan Raff  &#8221;Grate Works Apprentice&#8221; </span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2280" rel="attachment wp-att-2280"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2280" title="City of Orlando Rubbing" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/City-of-Orlando-Rubbing1-300x297.jpg" alt="" width="210" height="208" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;">Manhole Cover Rubbing used for reference.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;">A blank foam background is as intimidating as a fresh canvas is to a painter. The circle was drawn and the letters were formed.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2293" rel="attachment wp-att-2293"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2293" title="Blank Foam" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Blank-Foam-79x150.jpg" alt="" width="79" height="150" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2293" rel="attachment wp-att-2293"><span style="color: #993300;"><br />
</span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;"><img title="Letters" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Letters-150x106.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="106" /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #993300;">Once the letters and grids were added, the art work took shape. It looked OK.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2307" rel="attachment wp-att-2307"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="alignleft" title="Letters Ready for Cover" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Letters-Ready-for-Cover-150x90.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="90" /></span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2310" rel="attachment wp-att-2310"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-2310 aligncenter" title="Orlando Cover Beginnings" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Orlando-Cover-Beginnings-150x88.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="88" /></span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;">To create the bricks pavers, the grout tracks were cut out and the Individual brick edges were beveled. For protection the bricks were bandaged with plaster gauze: the kind used for broken-bone casts. Cement and acrylic paint were brushed on for brick texture.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2318" rel="attachment wp-att-2318"><span style="color: #993300;"><img title="Bricks Cut Out" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Bricks-Cut-Out-96x150.jpg" alt="" width="96" height="150" /></span></a>    <a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2329" rel="attachment wp-att-2329"><span style="color: #993300;"><img title="Gauze Bandage Bricks" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Gauze-Bandage-Bricks-112x150.jpg" alt="" width="112" height="150" /></span></a>    <a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2330" rel="attachment wp-att-2330"><span style="color: #993300;"><img title="Coloring Bandaged Bricks" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Coloring-Bandaged-Bricks-150x86.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="86" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;">For the arrow placement, I called upon my husband, Al to use his Mechanical and Architectural Drawing Skills. He sketched the &#8220;Parking Lot Arrow&#8221; and I painted the area. Stage One of the sculpture relief looks finished except for two problems, artistically speaking:  See if you can discover them?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2364" rel="attachment wp-att-2364"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="aligncenter" title="Colors Too Intense" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Colors-Too-Intense-190x300.jpg" alt="" width="190" height="300" /></span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;">The Colors were too intense and the letters of the manhole cover needed rotating to create artistic tension. This created frustrating challenges. Every single brick had to be recolored and then antiqued. The arrow was affected too. Now that it was more subdued, I hesitated to add opaque paint. So I completed the arrow image with glue and sprinkled sand.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2375" rel="attachment wp-att-2375"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2375" title="Subdue the Brick Colors" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Subdue-the-Brick-Colors-150x81.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="81" /></span></a></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2380" rel="attachment wp-att-2380"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2380" title="Recolored Bricks" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Recolored-Bricks-150x103.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="103" /></span></a></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;"> To rotate the manhole cover was a major  job.  Together Al and I cut around the  cover edges, gently prying up the cover.  We rotated it left forty-five degrees and I glued it back in place.  The only problem was that a few gaps appeared around the edges.  Guess how I solved that?  With artificial moss died green and actual cinders from our street.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #993300;">DA DUM!  THE FINISHED RELIEF</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2383" rel="attachment wp-att-2383"><span style="color: #993300;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2383" title="Finished Reduced" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Finished-Reduced-.jpg" alt="" width="384" height="570" /></span></a></span></p>

<p>December 25th, 2011  Michael Freeman</p>
<div id="attachment_2090" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 184px"><a href="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/?attachment_id=2090" rel="attachment wp-att-2090"><img class="size-medium wp-image-2090" style="margin: 5px;" title="City of Orlando 4" src="http://bobbimastrangelo.com/MyNews/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/City-of-Orlando-41-193x300.jpg" alt="" width="174" height="270" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">City of Orlando</p></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">POINCIANA — Bobbi Mastrangelo isn’t totally certain what the theme “Sculpture: the Ultimate Process” truly means, since like most works of art, it can be open to various interpretations.
“Ultimate usually means the final or the greatest,” she said. If that was the intention at the Orlando Museum of Art, Mastrangelo is indeed getting some very high praise.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Nevertheless, when the Orlando Museum of Art decided to make their theme for January “Sculpture: the Ultimate Process,” Mastrangelo said it was quite a privilege to be invited to display her own sculptures there.
“It gives the chosen artists a chance to show their work and meet the public, “It’s like a party, a reception, actually. Mastrangelo’s art will compliment the theme: “The Ultimate Process:” Thursday, Jan. 5 from 6-9 P.M.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Known as “Orlando’s original art party,” the 1st Thursdays are presented by the Associates, OMA’s volunteer support group committed to expanding the museum’s member ship and encouraging an appreciation of the visual arts.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #993300;"> &#8221;City of Orlando&#8221; </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Orlando Museum of Art is at 2416 N. Mills Ave. in downtown Orlando.  Admission for non-members of the Orlando Museum of Art is $10 at the door.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Mastrangelo is known for her sculpture relief works based on grates, drains, manhole covers and water covers. Her sculpture “City of Orlando” was inspired by the museum’s own parking lot at Loch Haven Park, with its terra cotta bricks and cast iron sanitary covers. I artistically created that scene. —There is also art outside the museum, so I’ve created the beauty of the art we walk over.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Mastrangelo, 74, is an artist who lives at the Solivita active adult community in Poinciana. As a member of The Solivita Artisans Guild, she continues to create new works of art and to display her creative pieces at different venues.</p>

<div>
<p>Drew&#8217;s Dad Wrote:  &#8221;Drew  was the youngest person to test for The BlackBelt, having just turned 9 in November 2011. On the left he is in his sparring gear, as they warmed up for sparring. He had to spar 2 opponents at once for 2 minutes. That’s longer than it sounds. And each candidate wrote an essay about their “journey” from beginning , to earning their belt, and 4 candidates were selected to read theirs – Drew was selected. He did a great job reading it, and he’s a total ham with a mic in his hand.&#8221;</p>
